Supporting Children's Mental Health Week 2021

By : Partnership for Children   Jan 27, 2021

For this year’s theme ‘Express Yourself’, we’ve created a special activity inspired by our brand new programme - SPARK Resilience. Spark Resilience draws on mindfulness, positive psychology and cognitive behavioural therapy to give children skills to boost their strengths, control strong emotions and reframe habitual ways of thinking.

This activity will help children express their feelings by writing or drawing about an emotional experience, expressing yourself in this way has been shown to have positive benefits for your mental health. The activity can be used in school, for home or for online learning.

Using the activity sheet provided or a sheet of paper:

Ask children to write about or draw a situation where they felt strong feelings. These could be positive or difficult feelings and it could have happened at school, at home or somewhere else.

If they have trouble coming up with ideas, you can make suggestions or give an example from your own childhood such as: 'You got exactly what you wanted for Christmas' or 'You had an argument with your best friend.'

Ask the children to talk about what they have created, you can use the following prompts:

- What happened?

- How did this make you feel?

- What did you do to feel better?
