Zippy' Friends in England and Wales
• Schools and kindergartens this year 179
• Children this year 4,752
• Total children since launch 40,988
Zippy’s Friends is currently running in 12 areas in the UK - Durham, Gloucestershire, Newcastle, Newham, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Southwark, Spelthorne, Sunderland, Warwickshire and West Surrey. Clusters of schools are often supported to run the programme by the local government’s Educational Psychology team.
Zippy's Friends was launched in Northamptonshire schools in early 2010 as part of the Targeted Mental Health in Schools programme (TaMHS). An evaluation study by Educational Psychologist Kathryn Davidson has concluded that the programme has a positive effect on both individual children and whole schools. You can read the study here.
Although Zippy’s Friends is designed for whole-class use, the London Borough of Southwark has successfully run the programme in its Pupil Development Centres, where children with emotional and behavioural difficulties are taught in small groups.
Fifteen special schools in England are also trialling an adapted version of the programme for children with special needs.
